As a homeowner or business owner, there are some basic steps that you can take to help prevent a rodent infestation. However, do be aware that these creatures are very resilient and resourceful and by the time you notice one in your home there may already be a large colony taking up residence! These precautions need to be taken long before you see your first rat or mouse:
Appropriate Food Storage - Food waste is one of the biggest attractions for rodents. Even small crumbs are enough to trigger an infestation. Seal dry goods such as cereals and grains in glass or plastic containers. Keep fruits and vegetables in your fridge and tie up any food waste securely in trash bags before placing them in a properly sealed trash can.
Don't Collect Cardboard - Many of us are in the habit of flattening cardboard packaging and saving it in the basement or garage until we take it away for recycling. However, cardboard is very attractive to rodents who love to chew it up for use in their nests. Take your cardboard recycling away regularly or at least keep it in a sealed plastic bin to avoid attracting rodents.
Seal Up Openings - Rodents have a unique physiology that allows them to squeeze themselves through the tiniest of gaps! Holes that appear far too small for them are barely a challenge! It is important to seal up any such holes around your property to stop rodents from gaining entry.
